Chandra Shekhar Azad (1906 – 1931) was an Indian revolutionary who played a leading role in the militant wing of the Indian independence movement.
Revolutionary activity
He reorganised the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association and mentored fighters including Bhagat Singh. He adopted the name "Azad", meaning "free", and vowed never to be taken alive by the British.
Death
Surrounded by police in 1931, he fought until his last bullet and died on his own terms, becoming a symbol of fearless sacrifice.
