Rise to power
With the guidance of his mentor Chanakya (Kautilya), he overthrew the Nanda dynasty and built a vast, well-organised empire from his capital at Pataliputra.
Empire
His administration, described in the Arthashastra, featured a strong army, taxation and spy networks. In later life he is said to have embraced Jainism and given up his throne.
Legacy
His grandson Ashoka would expand the empire further. Chandragupta is remembered as one of India's greatest empire-builders.
