Chess

Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a square board of 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid.

Play

Each player controls sixteen pieces — including the king, queen, rooks, bishops, knights and pawns — that move in different ways. The goal is to checkmate the opponent's king, trapping it so it cannot escape.

History

Chess originated in India as chaturanga and spread across the world. Today it is played competitively, with world champions and, increasingly, powerful computer engines.
