The Colosseum is an ancient oval amphitheatre in the centre of Rome, Italy, and one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering.

History

Built in the first century CE, it could hold tens of thousands of spectators who watched gladiator contests, animal hunts and public spectacles.

Today

Though partly ruined by earthquakes and stone-robbing, it remains an iconic symbol of ancient Rome and a major tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
