Coral reef
A coral reef is a underwater ecosystem built by colonies of coral polyps bound together by calcium carbonate skeletons, forming some of the most biodiverse habitats on Earth. Coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor yet support an estimated quarter of all marine species.

Role of zooxanthellae
Most reef-building (hermatypic) corals depend on a mutualistic relationship with photosynthetic dinoflagellates known as zooxanthellae, which live within the coral tissue. Zooxanthellae supply the coral with up to 90 percent of its energy through photosynthesis, which is why reef growth is largely confined to shallow, sunlit waters typically no deeper than 70 metres. This relationship also constrains reef distribution to regions where water is warm, clear, and relatively nutrient-poor.
Types of reef
Charles Darwin first systematically classified coral reefs in the nineteenth century. Three main structural types are recognised:
- Fringing reefs grow directly from shorelines, with little or no lagoon separating them from land.
- Barrier reefs run parallel to coastlines but are separated from them by a wide, deep lagoon. The Great Barrier Reef off northeastern Australia is the largest barrier reef system on Earth, stretching more than 2,300 kilometres.
- Atolls are ring-shaped reefs encircling a central lagoon, often the remnants of a volcanic island that has subsided beneath the sea.
Geographic distribution
Coral reefs are concentrated in a belt roughly between 30° north and 30° south of the equator, where sea surface temperatures typically remain between 23 °C and 29 °C. Major reef regions include the Coral Triangle of Southeast Asia (the global centre of marine biodiversity), the Caribbean Sea, the Red Sea, and the Indo-Pacific. The Coral Triangle alone is estimated to harbour more than 600 species of reef-building coral and over 2,000 species of reef fish, though precise figures vary by source.
Ecological significance
Coral reefs provide habitat, breeding grounds, and food sources for an enormous range of organisms, including fish, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, sponges, and marine mammals. They protect coastlines by dissipating wave energy, reducing erosion and storm damage. Reef ecosystems also underpin commercial and subsistence fisheries that feed hundreds of millions of people, particularly across Pacific and Indian Ocean island nations. Reef-derived compounds have contributed to pharmaceutical research, including treatments for certain cancers and viral infections.
Biodiversity
Despite covering less than one percent of the ocean floor, coral reefs are estimated to support approximately 25 percent of all marine species. This disproportionate species richness arises from the structural complexity of the reef, which creates innumerable ecological niches.
Threats and conservation
Climate change is the most significant threat facing coral reefs globally. Rising ocean temperatures cause coral bleaching, a phenomenon in which thermal stress forces corals to expel their zooxanthellae, leaving the skeleton white and the coral vulnerable to starvation and disease. Prolonged or repeated bleaching events can kill entire reef sections. Major global bleaching events occurred in 1998, 2010, and the mid-2010s, with the 2014–2017 event being described by researchers as the most severe on record at that time; additional events have been reported subsequently.
Ocean acidification
Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide dissolves into the ocean, lowering pH in a process called ocean acidification. Reduced pH impairs the ability of corals and other calcifying organisms to build and maintain their calcium carbonate structures, slowing reef growth and weakening existing skeletons.

- Overfishing removes herbivorous fish that keep algae in check, allowing algae to overgrow and smother coral.
- Coastal development and runoff introduce sediment and nutrients that reduce water clarity and promote algal growth.
- Crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) outbreaks periodically devastate reef sections across the Indo-Pacific.
- Destructive fishing practices such as blast fishing and cyanide fishing cause direct physical and chemical damage.
Conservation measures
Conservation strategies include the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs), restrictions on harmful fishing practices, coral gardening and transplantation programmes, water quality management, and international climate agreements aimed at limiting temperature rise. The effectiveness of MPAs depends heavily on enforcement and local community engagement.
Research and monitoring
Long-term monitoring programmes, including the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), track reef health worldwide using standardised survey methods. Remote sensing via satellite imagery supplements in-water surveys, enabling large-scale assessment of bleaching extent. Experimental research explores heat-tolerant coral strains and assisted evolution as potential tools for reef resilience, though these approaches remain controversial and largely experimental as of the early 2020s.
