Dhyan Chand (1905 – 1979) was an Indian field hockey player, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.

Achievements

Known as "The Wizard" for his extraordinary ball control and goal-scoring, he led India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936, a golden era for Indian hockey.

Legacy

India celebrates National Sports Day on his birthday, 29 August, and the country's highest sporting honour is named the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
