Diabetes is a long-term health condition in which the body cannot properly control the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood.
Types
In type 1 diabetes the body produces little or no insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. In type 2, the more common form, the body does not use insulin well, often linked to lifestyle and diet.
Management
Diabetes is managed through diet, exercise, medication and, for some, insulin injections. Uncontrolled diabetes can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.
