Diwali, or Deepavali, is the Hindu festival of lights, one of the most important festivals in India, also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists.

Meaning

Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. For many it marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, and it is linked to the goddess Lakshmi.

Celebration

People light oil lamps (diyas), decorate homes, share sweets, wear new clothes and set off fireworks over several days.
