Gautama Buddha (c. 5th–4th century BCE) was a spiritual teacher of ancient India whose teachings became the foundation of Buddhism.
Life
Born a prince named Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini (in present-day Nepal), he left his royal life in search of the meaning of suffering. After long meditation he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya and became the "Buddha", meaning the awakened one.
Teachings
He taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path as a way to end suffering through right conduct, mindfulness and wisdom.
Legacy
His teachings spread across Asia and Buddhism is today one of the world's major religions.
