The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that provides accurate location and time information to receivers anywhere on or near the Earth.

How it works

A network of satellites orbiting the Earth continuously broadcasts signals. A GPS receiver calculates its position by measuring the time taken for signals from several satellites to arrive, a process called trilateration. Corrections based on the theory of relativity are needed for accuracy.

Uses

GPS is used in smartphone maps, vehicle navigation, aviation, shipping, surveying, agriculture and emergency services. Other countries operate similar systems, such as India's NavIC.
