The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications built across the historical northern borders of China to protect against invasions.

Construction

Built and rebuilt over many centuries by different dynasties, especially the Ming, the wall stretches thousands of kilometres across mountains and deserts, made of stone, brick and earth.

Purpose

It served as defence, border control and a route for communication and trade along the Silk Road.
