Jaipur is the capital and largest city of Rajasthan, India, founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of the Kachwaha Rajput dynasty. It is the first planned city of modern India and serves as the cultural, commercial, and administrative hub of the state. Along with Delhi and Agra, Jaipur forms the popular tourist circuit known as the Golden Triangle.

History

Jaipur was established on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who ruled the princely state of Amber. Dissatisfied with the cramped layout of the old capital at Amber, Jai Singh commissioned the Bengali architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya to design a new city based on principles drawn from the ancient Hindu treatise on architecture, the Vastu Shastra, as well as from the Shilpa Shastra. The city was laid out on a grid plan divided into nine rectangular sectors, a remarkable feat of urban planning for its era.

Colonial and post-independence period

During British colonial rule, Jaipur remained a semi-autonomous princely state under the paramountcy of the British Crown. In 1876, Maharaja Ram Singh ordered the city's buildings to be painted pink in honour of a visit by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), giving rise to the enduring epithet "Pink City." Following Indian independence in 1947, Jaipur acceded to the Union of India and became the capital of the newly formed state of Rajasthan on 30 March 1949.

Geography and climate

Jaipur is located in the semi-arid eastern portion of Rajasthan, at approximately 26.9°N latitude and 75.8°E longitude, at an elevation of roughly 431 metres (1,414 feet) above sea level. The Aravalli Range lies to the west and north of the city, providing a natural topographic boundary.

The climate is classified as hot semi-arid (BSh under the Köppen system). Summers (April–June) are intensely hot, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40 °C (104 °F). The Indian Monsoon brings moderate rainfall between July and September. Winters (November–February) are mild and dry, with occasional cold waves.

Architecture and heritage

Jaipur's built environment blends Rajput, Mughal, and colonial architectural traditions. The city's Walled City of Jaipur was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, recognised for its exceptional urban planning and architectural ensembles.

Major monuments

  • Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds, 1799) — a five-storey sandstone façade featuring 953 small windows (jharokhas), built to allow royal women to observe street life.
  • City Palace — a sprawling complex of courtyards, gardens, and buildings that remains partly occupied by the erstwhile royal family.
  • Jantar Mantar — an astronomical observatory built by Jai Singh II around 1734, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, housing the world's largest stone sundial.
  • Amber Fort (Amer Fort) — a majestic hilltop Rajput fort-palace located approximately 11 kilometres from the city centre.
  • Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort — two additional hilltop fortifications that together with Amber Fort formed the city's historic defensive perimeter.

Urban planning legacy

The grid layout, with wide principal avenues and uniform building heights in the old city, is considered a forerunner of modern planned urban design in the Indian subcontinent. The nine-sector plan mirrored cosmological concepts found in Hindu mandala traditions.

Economy

Jaipur is a major economic centre in Rajasthan, with strengths in tourism, handicrafts, gemstone cutting and jewellery, textiles, and information technology. The city is internationally recognised for its blue pottery, block-printed fabrics, and hand-knotted carpets. The Gems and Jewellery sector in Jaipur accounts for a substantial share of India's gemstone export trade, though precise current figures may have changed since the time of writing.

The city hosts several industrial areas and special economic zones, and has seen growing investment in its IT and services sector, partly driven by proximity to the National Capital Region around Delhi.

Culture and society

Jaipur is a major centre of Rajasthani culture, cuisine, and festivals. The Jaipur Literature Festival, held annually in January, has grown into one of the world's largest free literary gatherings, attracting authors, scholars, and readers from across the globe.

The city hosts several significant festivals including Diwali, Teej, Gangaur, and the Jaipur Elephant Festival (though the latter has faced scrutiny from animal welfare advocates in recent years). Rajasthani cuisine — featuring dishes such as dal baati churma, laal maas, and ghevar — is central to the city's food culture.

Sports

Jaipur is home to the Rajasthan Royals Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket franchise. The Sawai Mansingh Stadium serves as the principal cricket venue. The city also has a team in the Pro Kabaddi League.

Administration and infrastructure

Jaipur is governed by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, divided into two zones (Jaipur North and Jaipur South) since 2020. The city is the headquarters of Jaipur district and Jaipur division.

Jaipur International Airport (Sanganer Airport) connects the city to major domestic and several international destinations. The Jaipur Metro, opened in 2015, provides rapid transit along two operational lines within the city. National Highway networks and regular rail services link Jaipur to Delhi, Mumbai, and other major cities.
