Kittur Chennamma (1778 – 1829) was the queen of the princely state of Kittur in present-day Karnataka, and one of the earliest Indian rulers to lead an armed rebellion against the British East India Company.
Revolt
When the British refused to recognise her adopted son as heir, she resisted their attempt to annex Kittur, winning an early battle in 1824 before being defeated and imprisoned.
Legacy
She is honoured as a pioneer of resistance to colonial rule and a symbol of women's courage in India.
