Lal Bahadur Shastri

Lal Bahadur Shastri (1904 – 1966) was an Indian statesman who served as the second Prime Minister of India from 1964 to 1966.

Career

A participant in the Indian independence movement, he held several ministries after independence and became prime minister following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Leadership

He led the country during the 1965 war with Pakistan and coined the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan ("Hail the soldier, hail the farmer"), honouring soldiers and farmers. He promoted the Green Revolution and the White Revolution in milk production.

Death

He died in Tashkent in 1966, a day after signing a peace agreement with Pakistan. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna.
