Mercury is the innermost and smallest planet in the Solar System, orbiting the Sun at an average distance of approximately 57.9 million kilometres (35.98 million miles). Named after the Roman messenger god, Mercury has been known since antiquity and remains one of the five planets visible to the naked eye. Despite its proximity to the Sun, Mercury is not the hottest planet — that distinction belongs to Venus — owing to its negligible atmosphere and consequent inability to retain heat.

Physical characteristics

Mercury has a mean radius of approximately 2,440 kilometres, making it only slightly larger than Earth's Moon. Its mass is about 3.3 × 10²³ kilograms, giving it a surface gravity roughly 38 percent that of Earth. A person weighing 100 kilograms on Earth would weigh approximately 38 kilograms on Mercury.

Internal structure

Mercury possesses an unusually large iron core relative to its total size. The core is estimated to extend roughly 85 percent of the planet's radius, accounting for a disproportionately large fraction of its mass. This oversized core is thought to be the result of either a giant impact early in the planet's history that stripped away much of its mantle, or of preferential accretion of iron-rich material in the inner Solar System. The planet retains a weak but measurable magnetic field, approximately 1 percent the strength of Earth's, confirming that at least part of the core remains molten.

Surface and geology

Mercury's surface is heavily cratered and superficially resembles the Moon. It is divided into ancient heavily cratered terrain, smoother volcanic plains, and long cliff-like scarps called lobate scarps or rupes, which are thought to have formed as the planet cooled and contracted. The largest known impact basin on Mercury is the Caloris Basin, approximately 1,550 kilometres in diameter, formed by a massive asteroid or comet impact billions of years ago. Directly opposite the Caloris Basin on the planet's other side lies a region of chaotic, hilly terrain, likely created by seismic waves focused through the planet at the moment of impact.

Temperature extremes

Because Mercury lacks a significant atmosphere, it cannot distribute or retain solar heat efficiently. Dayside temperatures can reach approximately 430 °C (800 °F), while the nightside plunges to around −180 °C (−290 °F). Permanently shadowed polar craters may harbour water ice, a hypothesis supported by data from the MESSENGER spacecraft.

Orbit and rotation

Mercury orbits the Sun in approximately 87.97 Earth days. Its orbit is notably elliptical, with an eccentricity of about 0.206, the highest of any planet in the Solar System. Mercury rotates on its axis once every 58.65 Earth days, creating a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance — it completes exactly three rotations for every two orbits around the Sun. As a result, a single solar day on Mercury (from one sunrise to the next) lasts approximately 176 Earth days, twice the length of its year.

The slow rotation and highly elliptical orbit produce a peculiar effect: an observer on Mercury's surface near perihelion would see the Sun appear to briefly reverse direction in the sky.

Perihelion precession

Mercury's perihelion — the point in its orbit closest to the Sun — advances slightly with each orbit, a phenomenon that classical Newtonian mechanics could not fully explain. The anomalous precession of approximately 43 arcseconds per century was one of the key pieces of evidence that supported Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which accurately predicted it.

Atmosphere and magnetosphere

Mercury has an extremely tenuous exosphere rather than a true atmosphere. It consists primarily of oxygen, sodium, hydrogen, helium, and potassium, derived from solar wind particles, micrometeorite impacts, and outgassing from the surface. The surface pressure is negligible — far less than one-trillionth of Earth's atmospheric pressure.

Despite its weak magnetic field, Mercury does possess a magnetosphere that interacts with the solar wind, producing dynamic phenomena including magnetic tornadoes — twisted bundles of magnetic field lines — that allow solar wind plasma to reach the surface.

Observation and exploration

Ancient and historical observation

Mercury's visibility is limited because it never strays far from the Sun as seen from Earth, appearing only briefly after sunset or before sunrise. Babylonian astronomers recorded observations of Mercury at least as early as the first millennium BCE. Nicolaus Copernicus reportedly lamented never having observed Mercury directly owing to atmospheric haze at his latitude.

Spacecraft missions

Only two spacecraft have visited Mercury to date. Mariner 10, launched in November 1973, performed three flybys in 1974 and 1975 and mapped roughly 45 percent of the planet's surface. It also confirmed the existence of Mercury's magnetic field.

MESSENGER (Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging) was launched in August 2004 and entered Mercury's orbit in March 2011 — the first spacecraft to do so. Over four years of orbital operations it mapped the entire surface, confirmed water ice at the poles, and provided detailed measurements of the magnetic field and exosphere before deliberately impacting the planet in April 2015.

BepiColombo, a joint mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), was launched in October 2018 and is en route to Mercury as of the mid-2020s, with orbital insertion anticipated around late 2025 (subject to mission updates). It is expected to build substantially on MESSENGER's findings.

Scientific significance

Mercury occupies a unique position in planetary science. Its large core-to-mantle ratio provides important constraints on planetary formation models. Its documented perihelion precession remains a landmark test of general relativity. Evidence of water ice in permanently shadowed craters raises questions about the delivery of volatiles to the inner Solar System. As the least-explored of the four terrestrial planets, Mercury holds considerable potential for future discovery.
