Rani Lakshmibai

Rani Lakshmibai (1828 – 1858) was the queen (rani) of the princely state of Jhansi and one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against the British East India Company.

Resistance

After the death of her husband, the British refused to recognise her adopted son as heir under the Doctrine of Lapse and annexed Jhansi. She refused to surrender the state and organised its defence.

1857 uprising

When the rebellion spread, she took up arms, defending Jhansi and later joining rebel forces at Gwalior. She died in battle in 1858, reportedly fighting on horseback.

Legacy

Rani Lakshmibai is celebrated as a symbol of resistance and women's courage in India, remembered in folk songs and poetry.
