The respiratory system is the group of organs and tissues that help the body breathe, taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide.

Main parts

Air enters through the nose and mouth, passes down the windpipe (trachea) and into the lungs, where tiny air sacs called alveoli exchange gases with the blood.

Function

Oxygen is carried by the blood to all cells for energy, while carbon dioxide, a waste product, is breathed out. Breathing is controlled automatically by the brain.
