A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth, casting a shadow that blocks the Sun's light for a time.

Types

In a total solar eclipse the Moon completely covers the Sun, turning day briefly to twilight. In a partial eclipse only part of the Sun is hidden.

Solar eclipses must be viewed with special protection, as looking directly at the Sun can damage the eyes. They occur only during a new moon.
