Returning to the area of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, in 1903 with their powered Wright Flyer, the brothers faced practical challenges including designing an efficient propeller and a lightweight engine. Because no automobile manufacturer could supply an engine meeting their weight and power requirements, their mechanic Charlie Taylor built a custom gasoline engine in about six weeks.
On December 17, 1903, the brothers made four flights. The first, piloted by Orville, lasted approximately 12 seconds and covered about 120 feet (37 metres). The fourth and longest flight, by Wilbur, lasted 59 seconds and covered approximately 852 feet (260 metres). Five witnesses were present. A photograph taken by one of those witnesses — showing the Flyer airborne with Orville at the controls and Wilbur running alongside — became one of the most iconic images in aviation history.
Development and public demonstrations
Following their 1903 success, the brothers continued refining their designs at Huffman Prairie, a pasture outside Dayton, producing the Wright Flyer II (1904) and Wright Flyer III (1905), which they considered the first truly practical airplane. The Flyer III could fly banked turns, circles, and figure eights and remain aloft for more than half an hour.
The brothers were secretive about their work during this period, wary of having their designs copied before they secured patents and commercial contracts. A U.S. patent (No. 821,393) for their flying machine was granted in May 1906, covering the system of aerodynamic control rather than the aircraft as a whole.
In 1908, the brothers finally gave extensive public demonstrations. Wilbur traveled to France, where his flights at Le Mans astonished European aviators who had doubted American claims of sustained controlled flight. Orville simultaneously demonstrated the aircraft to the U.S. Army at Fort Myer, Virginia, though a crash in September 1908 injured Orville and killed his passenger, Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge — the first fatality in a powered airplane accident.

Wilbur died of typhoid fever on May 30, 1912, in Dayton, at age 45, before the full commercial potential of aviation was realised. Orville later wrote that the loss of his brother was the greatest grief of his life.
Orville Wright
Orville sold the Wright Company in 1915 and largely withdrew from commercial aviation. He lived to witness the breaking of the sound barrier in 1947 and the development of jet aircraft, dying on January 30, 1948. He served on the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a predecessor to NASA.
Recognition and disputes
The Wright brothers' achievement was contested for decades. A long-running dispute with the Smithsonian Institution arose because the Institution initially promoted Langley's Aerodrome as the first machine capable of flight.
