Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu (1879 – 1949) was an Indian poet, political activist and freedom fighter, known as the "Nightingale of India" for her lyrical poetry.

Freedom movement

A close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, she played a leading role in the Indian independence movement and served as president of the Indian National Congress.

Firsts

After independence she became the Governor of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), the first woman to hold the office of governor of an Indian state.
